Idea?

There is a story in today's paper concerning Mayor Timothy P. Murray is calling on the state to beef up the commuter rail schedule and divert some Logan International Airport flights to Worcester Regional Airport while Big Dig tunnels are being repaired.

Myself, I think we need to be more specific in our request to help divert some of the Logan Flights; for example, ORH will waive all landing fees etc if Logan could divert 2 of 10 daily JetBlue flights from Logan-JFK. What if we created a petition stating this at http://www.petitiononline.com??

T&G says Murray is handing this task off to the manager. He s/b our ambassador on this issue not MOB. I suspect the reasons he's not getting involved are:

1. He doesnt want to be perceived by the greater Boston area voters as invading Logans turf

2. It may be a doomed mission from the outset and he doesnt want to be involved with it.

Mr Murray seems to forget who elected him and who he still represents. He has no problem getting involved with commuter rail service to RI, b/c that is more a statewide issue and fits HIS interests at the moment.

On another note I see Sovereign bank is offering a free "companion" round trip ticket to anyone who opens a new checking acct at SOV. 19 airlines are involved and you can fly from any major city in the country. FYI, Worc. is not a major city.

Kind of interesting considering SOV's footprint is basically in the Northeast, yet I could book a round trip tix out of LAX which is 3000 miles removed from SOV turf. I understand Citibank and PNC have similar deals.

The deal is handled by a company called PROBCO. Maybe Commerce or another local bank could offer a similar deal for their local customers and the round trip tix could be limited to flying from ORH? Alleigant & Commerce might even land a few new customers in the process.

Correction: PROPCO not proBco.

I don't believe the mayor has the authority to actually negotiate that the city manager does.

Since it appears that Julie Jacobsen actually did the negotiations with Allegiant, I would like to see her involved.

Charley, but we all know these politicians are always getting involved behind the scenes with things they have no business doing. I realize their job is to legislate and set policy, but they have a habit of doing even more if it benefits them, even though they are in violation of the city charter.

Agreed, The Mayor has no authority, yet he's in the forefront of this MBTA train service issue and are we really negoitating anything or are we just trying to sell ORH?

I have to believe these pols are also regularly "involved" on the sidelines in union negoitations.

I haven't heard of any 'official' discussing selling ORH. The IMG report pretty much dismissed the idea, and I don't see the pols admitting their $100,000 report was wrong.

If it's sold to a private company, it will no linger qualify for federal funding, so that won't happen.

Massport is the only likely suitor, but I don't see a reason why they would buy it. If they continue dribbling a few dollars per year into it, they retain control. What do they gain by buying it?
