McAllen-Miller Airport

Have you ever heard of McAllen-Miller Airport? Other then remembering it being on Allegiant's flight map, I had never heard of it before. The other day my brother-in-law, who flies alot on business, flew through this airport and was very impressed by the amenities and flight options.

Notice on the front page of their website free parking (up to 14 days), free wireless and the overall information available on their website. This seems to be a common thread for any successful secondary airport:

Now take a look at Worcester Regional Airport website. Although I believe a name change makes alot of sense in the long term, a name change typically signifies "new and improved". Lets focus on more flights, free parking, free wireless, a better website, finish the work on Airport Drive and then talk about a name change.

man, when you look at other airport's websites, they have a lot of information on terminals, runways, services, etc...what does ORH's website have...NOTHING. That site has not been updated since the first day Allegiant took off from Worcester, which was December 22 or 23 I believe. Someone needs to get on the ball with the website, otherwise no one is going to care about the airport. The site has no useful information on it.

It is pretty embarassing that it does not even dedicated hosting for FlyWorcester.com, but instead takes up a page in the city website.

More importantly I hope you noticed they all provide free parking. That is the key with secondary airports. Now they are starting to move into free wireless.

I have a question...have you ever contacted the airport director or liason to suggest they change the website to a separate page from the citys site, like Manchesters site...I tried to email the both of them, but after 2 months, I have gotten no response, and for what reason I do not know, I mean Waldron isn't the director of Massport or nothing, he's the director Of Worcester Airport, he can't be that busy not to mail me back in 2 months .

John, now you have a sense of the frustration that those of us who have been involved in this endeavor for years experience, and continue to experience.

While screwing around on the net, I came across two airport websites. Both are very similar to Worcester Airport and yet they seem to be successful judging by the info on their websites. The Dothan Regional Airport in Alabama is very similar to ORH, actually, ORH may even be larger and may have more to offer, however Dothan seems to do well. Their website is
www.flydothan.com

Also, Page Field in Florida is just slightly smaller than ORH, yet they have all the same amenities, on site power plant, maintenance dept., airport police, fire dept., etc. In addition, the are solely a general aviation airport. Their site is
http://lcpaairports.com/fmy/about/ataglance.php

It kind of makes you wonder how other airports so similar and having little to no commercial traffic are thriving and ORH which is capable of reaching the status of a major New England airport is barely holding on.

Dave H:

Read the blog today (6/24) from the airport director at McAllen Airport. i e-mailed him yesterday and he gets back to me today!! Maybe this symbolic of why they are succesful and we are not.

E-mail ORH admin, ask questions and see what happens. More importantly check out the content of his answer and you see things like

Complete Master Plan
Public Meetings
Customer Service

All the above is sorely lacking at ORH

Bill,

I did read that reply. It was great...to the point, you can tell he encouraged the interest in the airport and you know what their plans are and what their doing to improve the airport. On the same note, the airports I talked about in the above post are similar. Their websites give alot of great information and it appears as though they are thriving businesses. I absolutely agree that ORH is giving off a bad vibe as everything is so secretive and they don't seem to value their supporters. This is where the customer service needs to begin, as not only are we supporters, but we are customers. I neither gain nor lose anything if the airport closes (which I don't want to see) or if it becomes a success. I just want to utilize it as a customer. As for the Master Plan, I can't wait to see it, however, I don't want to know about what's going to happen in 2011, I want to know what's going to happen next week. It kills me, because we know Allegiant has been a success, but how are they branching off that success? What is going to happen this year? It's sad, as I read the archive posts on this site, I am seeing ORH supporters gradually losing faith mainly because we are running on speculation and our hopes of what the airport will turn out to be instead of hearing the facts from those who hold the airports future in thier hands.
