Fire Water

I am not going to elaborate too much, I do not want to bum Paul out or be told that comparing to Worcester to Boston/Providence is not fair. I spent alot of time in Providence during my college years (82-86) with my roommate from Warwick. Providence was not much better then Worcester then, today there is no comparison.

Towards the end of the night, one person on the other side of the Blackstone River jumped in, very much like Jenny in Forest Gump. This person was screaming something other then Forrest, but I could not make it out until the person next to me said that it sounded like "silly blogger" then I noticed the Z Cavarice Jeans. Thats right, yours truly Harry Tembenis.

Actually did not bump into him last night, but we did have breakfast with Harry and his wife on Federal Hill today. The possibilities are endless in Worcester, but if we could only straighten out this street vendor problem.

If you have never seen Fire Water, I strongly recommend it but stay over at one of the many fine hotels. We stayed at the Westin that had a walkway right into Providence Place. The weird thing about Providence, however, is that signs that say Art District, you can actually find art?

True, true ...on what Providence USED to be...back in the mid to early 1980's...it could have been described as a poor man's Lawrence, MA. Now... they are building luxury high rises, have an airport with actual airlines, a train station which even has Acela service and a world class mall. Just walking around downtown Providence I passed the following national steakhouses... Don Shula's , Capiral Grille, Ruth's Chris and Fleming's ... Worcester has what...111 Chophouse?! No offense but 111 is great for Worcester, but would be buried by those national chains...and they are all surviving AND thriving within walking distance of each other in DOWNTOWN Providence. Just shows what a can do effort, some leadership and the PROPER investments can help turn a city around, even in an old Northeastern milltown...

Before you try to compare Worcester to Boston or Providence, look try looking a little closer to home. By some measures, Worcester is no longer even the commercial center of the Worcester area. Auburn has a larger enclosed shopping mall, more hotel rooms, and more new car dealerships. Could be because Auburn has better highway access than Worcester. Or, maybe it is because, in Auburn, landmark publicly funded projects don’t crowd out the private sector.

I lived in Providence in 97-99 and then again 2003-2005. Both times in areas that were the blight of the community even ten years ago. You can thank Mr.Buddy Cianci for the crocked improvements and growth in that city. I remember going to my aunts as a kid and getting fruit and veggies from Mafia owned train loads... Worcester I could only hope could be another Providence. Now there is TONS of housing in downtown Providence but I remember in 99 that was only a dream.

The comments about Auburn are BS, Auburn has died in the last 10 years, all the retail and restraunts have moved to areas such as Millbury and the days of the "enclosed mall" being the way to shop are very much over...You go anywhere in the country with newer development and everything looks like Blackstone in Millbury..Everything. But Worcester has a longgggg way to go to be a thriving city in my opinion, not enough people willing to see past the past.
