Here's the link about Friendly's in the T&G. 3 more in the local area have closed as part of their continued reorganization.

On a more positive note, CitySquare road construction has been fast tracked to include extending Front Street to Washington Sq. right away, and adding Mercantile Street, Trumbull Street, and Eaton Place at the same time.

More from today's T&G.

I am puzzled about this expedited build out of Front St?

Rumor always had it that the parking garage being built on the gov't dime was effectively a $25M payoff from Clyde Crashcup for Berkley using union labor on City Sq. SO i had thot the free parking garage passed to Hanover as they stepped into Berkleys shoes. Now it's on hold?

However, infrastructure (a wall?) will be built so that eventaully the parking will come to pass. I am kinda confused trying to picture how that works, but ill defer to engineer types on that and accept it as stated. Is it just a concrete wall or a huge concrete under ground cavern?. Will Front St have to be dug up again to build the garage?

So...........we wont immediately need all the original parking spaces planned? May I ask why not?
We're not getting the hole truth here....kind alike Obuma telling us his Health care plan will not add a single dime tot he deficit.....coerrct ...but instead of not costing a dime....it will cost zillions.....the truth but not the whole truth

Altho I like most of Mike Obriens management, when I couple this lastest City Sq happening with how the procedure for the closing of Downing St was handled.....well truth be told I now feel more than ever that as re: City Sq we're getting Murraied.... a.k.a. mushroomed.

So is this it for Friendlys in Worcester???

West side...Tatnuck.....gone
South side..Webstah Sq..gone
East Side...Grafton St..gone
North end...Lincoln St..gone
Center.......Downtown...gone

Hey but we're still friendly as Friendly House survives...only b/c its gubmint $$$$

BTW I was downtown last weak.........is that skating rink all set to go for this winter? Didnt look it to me.......all fenced in with 6 ft portable cyclone fence with a slight dusting of snow on it. Well it least it's portabel temporary fencing and not permanent fencing. And puuuhleeeze...i dont want to hear that the current re constr of City Hall plaza will preclude the rink opening this winter

Word verf: fibas....mmmm...for u Es Jay guys...thats fibbers :)

the city is waiting on a "bike path" grant fom the state to erect a building to host the ice-cooling equipment, city hall air conditioning, and lockers for bike riders

Jahn: According to Friendly's website, the Grafton Street location is still open. Don't rob me of my Strawberry Fribbles! I'm still shell shocked from when Newport Creamery closed their Worcester store and it became a Boston Market ... that was simply Awful!Awful!

:D

AFAIK, Friendly's on Grafton Street near the Perkins Farm Plaza (aka South Plaza) is still open.

TY to Harry and David for correcting me.

After I posted that friendlys list, I thought to myself that that I THINK there also used to be Friendlys on Belmont St opposite UMass, but it closed years ago..... possibly when one was built in White City Plaza?

Ya know I will swear that decades ago the Friendly Fribble was known as an Awful Awful. I vividly recall the older guys in my hood trying to see how many of what they called Awful Awfuls one could drink.

Myself I always loved their cheeseburger which was a Grilled cheese sandwich on regular sized bread and then the Hamburg patty was grilled separately and placed on the grilled cheese sandwich.

I think we dont even have a White Tower Hamburg joint anymore?

Sometimes I wonder if the vendor pushcarts hadnt been practically outlawed if they could make a nice go of it with all these eateries closing up?

I still say some enterprising yuong, unemployed, recent law school grad could make name for himself taking on the city on this issue. The city has practically made it impossible to site a vendor pushcart anywhere in Worcester.

Hopefully this would be Similar to how the city got their ass kicked on zoning laws that for all intents and purposes limited strip joints to industrial parks.

How does a local bricks and mortar food merchant get off having the power to veto my Hot Wagon? To steal anothers phrase, how does the city get to legislate the winners & losers in the local eateries business world.

Flats Pizza closing and being reincarnated as Oregano's.

How much are those annual PILOT payments Clark is supposed to make? Are these numbers correct?

Flat's? Location-location-location. nothing ever succeeds there...

There was an excellent wings place there a few years back and they did not survive there. They also tried to open up a satellite pizza place next to Marty's on Canterbury Street that did not make it..

Very tough month for businesses in the City of Worcester.

There are some locations that just seem to be doomed, aren't there?

Jahn said...

Sprout, good to see you once every 6 months :)

I have written here until my fingers fall off that Clarks so called Pilot payment will be 99% used to spruce Clarks immedaite environs including but not limited to Crystal park upgrades. Please also keep in mind that Clarks annual payment is about $262,000....BUT....BUT....BUT as part of the deal Clark was allowed to remove from the city tax rolls property that paid 160,000 in RE taxes to the city AND......AND....AND cLARK was handed 12,000 sq ft of city owened property for free (aka Downing St)

SO bottom line is the net cost to Clark (and the NET Pilot Payment to city) is only $102,000 (262k less 160k)...agian of which probably 100,000 Clark will be use to spruce up Main South or possibly the Park ave side of the campus, too

I have repeatedly asked Nick K to out both the city and Clark on this and my requests here fall on deaf ears. Someone the other day said Nick K isnt worth reading anyday b/c his pieces are so one sided. I am starting to agree.

The school committeman has pulled off quite a coup with this so called 262k pilot payment to the city and the CC & CM Obrien also has not come clean on the reality of this so called 262K.

It is like saying Spruout pulls in 275k at the flower shop w/o saying that he also has 200k of expenses.
