UMass Psych Unit

There is a public announcement in this morning's T&G about the relocation of the in-patient psychiatric treatment center by UMass. They are proposing moving it from the campus of Worcester State Hospital to 26 Queen Street.

It must be governed by State law but there will be no public hearing unless 10 taxpayers of Massachusetts register in connection of the application and make a formal request for a hearing in writing no later than January 25th.

The Public Announcement can be found on page C9 in the legal notices.

hEY THIS IS GREAT, MORE "BUSINESSES" CLOSEr TO The CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT. The entire former city hospital area will become a neighborhood locale for Worc's #2 business niche ....crazies, boozers, and dopers..2nd only to low income housing.

Here's to hoping that the psyche unit at least has all clients under lock down 24/7. If not I see more of you know what roaming the Common and City Squared...which was just topped off yesterday......talk about timing!

Maybe these business are like car lots, i.e. they tend to locate adjacent to or nearby each other? Kinda like how car lots were to Park Ave years ago and how they are to Rte 9 now.

And every Worc Airport in-bound flight will be flying right over the Cuckko's Nest. Maybe Jack will even be on board.

Hey at least it aint in my neighborhood.

And heres a wrod verifications for Sprouts: "unprouts"

You're welcome Bill. It's amazing what you find by reading the legal notices in the T&G.

Speaking of that, last night at supper my wife made an observation when we were discussing this public notice.

She believes this was the real reason that SMOC needed to move out. UMass needed this space for the moving of the Psych unit to Queen Street. This was probably being planned for some time.

David, interesting observation from your wife. But doesnt it speak volumes about lack of FULL/100% transparency for the Piedmont hood and how these mental health providers always do things incrementally....one site at a time....almost how cancer can slowly kill ya.

Hit send too fast.

Am i the only one who chuckles when i see the Hysterical Society and Preservation Worcester worry about saving the Worc State Hospital Clock tower..........yet our poor neighborhoods are being destroyed with low income housing, 1/2 way houses, mental hospitals, and PIP's.

Full disclosure... I do love old architecture and have been known to contribute to Presvervation Woo.

Psych unit in question belongs to umass memorial, not the state. umass memorial runs queen street hospital.

Old unit is moving because the new hospital will be coming online soon. Once that happens the old hospital will be decommissioned.

Mr. Anonymous, I am wondering, does it really matter who the psyche-hospital belongs to....UMass, Memorial, SMOC, PIP, Paulie, Bill, Jahn, the feeds , the state, or whoever................it's the nature of the patients, not owner(s)that is the issue.

I am just telling you why the unit is moving. The building is closing. UMMHC will not be having a presence in the new building.

First of all, according to the T&G the Triage and Assessment Center was located at 72 Jaques ave on the UMass CHL campus and the proposed
move of the UMASS psych unit would be to 26 Queen Street...two different buildings… so the moving of the shelter had nothing to do with that. It had to do with shady Worcester politics. Secondly, if anyone took the time to look into the current psych unit they would
see that it has always been a locked unit so no one has to worry about the "crazies", as you so eloquently put it, getting out. Thirdly, I am so happy to see that all of your lives are so perfect that you feel you can pass judgment on those less fortunate than yourselves. Did you ever stop to think that these “crazies, boozers, and dopers” all have a story? It’s not like you wake up one day and think ‘hey I’m going to shoot heroin today’. These people have lived a very tough life and their current circumstances reflect that. Oh and if I were you Jahn I would look into psychiatric disorders before you vilify the nature of “these people”… Anyone can develop many of the disorders that are treated at the psych unit: schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, depression, etc. can, for the most part, occur at any point during a person’s life. One day you may find yourself looking out from the other side of the proverbial “glass house” and see people looking back at you with the same distain you have today.
