Cigarette Story

Ran into an RJ Reynolds rep today. He told me that the border stores in NH, it is not unusual for them to be selling 5,000 cartons of cigs per week. I can not tell you how many cartons that is. In other words, how many people are going to New Hampshire to buy their cigs is even bigger then I even imagined.

I am not a smoker but I do know that there are 10 packs in a carton and 20 cigarettes in a pack. Therefore, that is 1,000,000 cigarettes sold. That's crazy.

Believe me when you could actually sell cigs in Massachusetts, a store doing a big volume would do 600-750 cartons per week in Worcester.

5,000 cartons is unreal. The guy who told me this is 100% reliable.

I have to wonder to myself how many budding entrepeneurs (who never had to take an entrepeneur course at teh MLK Empowerment Center) are making a couple of trips per week to Cow Hampshire for the express purpose of helping their cigarette smoking customers beat the Mass taxes on butts?

There have to be a few savvy folks who are currently unemployed who running such an enterprise. Maybe they can even scam an SBA Loan to buy a good vehicle?

So re City Sq, last fall I read 2-3x of an agreement in principle between UNUM and Berkley. Given current rumors, I have to assume that is dead? At the time, I noted that agreemnts in principle are basically meaningless.

Would be ironic if after 4 years on Beacon Hill Tim (Pitbull) Murray is forced (not re-elected) back to Worcester and his signature project has not even commenced demolitoin 4 years later or even if demo is complete there is not yet any new construction.
