I know we are seeing this as another blow to ORH, but who knows maybe we should look at it as maybe SouthWest is one step closer to ORH?
The one that really bothers me is Cape Air. Remember this blog first started when JetBlue was just starting to invest in the Embrear 190. Our idea at that time was a flight from ORH to JFK on the smaller Embraer, fomr there then connect direct to anywhere. That did not work, although the Embraer makes five round trips per day out of Boston and I still think one of these round trips could be diverted to ORH.

- Hyannis
- Martha's Vineyard
- Nantucket
Best part is that they have a code sharing arrangement with JetBlue so it appears as JetBlue flight but you avoid the long lines at Boston since you go through the smaller airport lines. I believe there are two flights per day from these smaller airports.
Go on the JetBlue website and check out a flight from any of these cities. It makes no sense to me that this has been done for these four cities but not for ORH.

With an airport that good, I don't know why JetBlue hasn't started flying out of Worcester yet, especially now with Southwest starting in Boston.
Good point Bill. The only reason I could think of is that it's probably not profitable for them to do so, or else they would be flying out of Worcester already.
According to the city manager from a council meeting, alot of fees were waived to get Direct Air to come to Worcester. Wouldn't hurt to do the same for Cape Air. There shouldn't be a conflict in routes.

I think only in the past 6 months, Cape Air added Albany, NY (plus 4 other upstate locations); Rutland, VT; Lebanon, NH; and Rockland, ME. Before this they provided service to Boston, New Bedford and Providence from the Cape and Islands. I wrote a letter about 2 years ago to Cape Air about coming to Worcester. They said they continue to have discussions with Worchester (yes that's how they spelled it!) but at the time it didn't fit into their plans. They would rather have something that kept the planes busy in the 'off season'. At what season does someone actually want to go to Albany? The only way to get airlines back in there is to offer it dirt cheap with an incremental climb so they can build up their service.
All of Cape Air's recent expansion has been to city pairs that offer EAS funding, including the soon to start Baltimore hub. This is the only way an airline can enter service and be guaranteed not to lose money in a marginal, at best market. ORH fits into this marginal status which is proven over the years. The only way ORH will get Cape Air is with some sort of revenue guarantee.
I'm sure airlines will come now that the State will own the airport.
