Jewel Box

Rumor is this is closing and to be rented out as sports bar, heard that from a fellow blogger.

Stand corrected, it has already been closed for a couple months.  How long ws it open then as the Jewel Box?

I think the Jewel Box was closed shortly after it opened at least a couple of months back. Niche Hospitality should have kept Block 5 opened.

the location is not ready for high end...what Niche has been trying to do there reminds me of the early days of Davis Square...few business except Johnny D's which started the resurgence of Davis Square in Somerville made it out of the close comforts of Davis Square...as the neighborhoods gentrified outside of Davis moving towards Teele and Davis itself received state and national recognition did you see Holland Street which connects Davis & Teele Square become a destination and Teele Square itself...now Ball Square is taking off as is Union Square and East Somerville..I love gentrification:>)

Paulie,

Every time I visited Block 5 (one of my faves) it seemed to be doing quite well in spite of the local demographics. I think Niche Hospitality made a big mistake closing it down. IMHO, the failure so quickly of the Jewel Box was due to the concept and not the location.

I am miffed how there could be a billboard on 290 giving kudos to the new state police honcho Marian McGovern and at the bottom of the sign the Vernon Hill Amer Legion Post #435(?)gives a big thank you or congratulations or something to that effect.

I am puzzled the Post has this kind of money to pay for something like this or maybe I am being presumptuous and others are paying for it or maybe it's gratis?

Why does the Nat'L Water Main Cleaning compnay working on Sunderland Rd next to the Big Y need a detail officer when the city pipe cleaning crews do not? Hey......i guess no one cares that the city crew gets hit by a motor vehicle. where in gods name is the SEIU on thsi?

If Lake Ave is so dangerously affected by the threat of a land slide, wouldnt a rational person completely close down the road? So someday I am hauling +ss over Lake ave with an overloaded 1966 B-81, 24 speed, Mack 10 wheeler and I traverse that allegedely dangersous stretch of Lake Ave and sheer weight of my vehicle (16 tons empty plus 22 tons of stone = 38 tons) and the vibration it causes induces a miniature landslide. Ellis & Ellis's telophonos will be ringing off the wall and it will be gross negligence & lots of closed door, executive sessions of the city council. Is there really any such thing as one lane being safe and the abutting lane being in peril? Last I knew, landslides do not recognize double solid yellow lines (or are they white).

Congrats are in order to my affable, about town, Pickle Barrel loving, robust, pal, Bill Coleman for standing up and asking ther city to recognixe Mr Tom Hoovers 10 year term as city manager. Like or dislike Mr Hoover, thsi is only fitting and proper. FWIW, I think Tom was an OK kinda guy. Type of guy most anyone could sit down and have as brew with. Bill should stop by here someday and say hello

I think if they were making money Dave they would still be open. It is safe to safe that the owners made a decision on what they were seeing on the spreadsheet:>)
