City Park Grille Closes

Feel bad.  Food was good and the restuarant was nice, but it simply had no chance of making down there right now.

It was good; it had great service the time I was there, too. Sorry to see it go.

I heard that MCPHS was going to take over the space and use it as a student lounge, coffee shop & bookstore.

Do you still bother maintaining your list of closed businesses?

Paulie's Point of View said...

perhaps the MCPHS can just buy us all out Dave:>)

Maybe if a business opened down there whose target demographic was the 600 or so units across the street filled with students and young professionals and then marketed themselves to them instead of banking on the fact that their business idea is so good that people are going to drive into downtown, pay to park, and largely go out of there way to frequent their business they MAYBE they would have a shot.

Just a thought.

You're absolutely right Gabe. Look at the Abbey, they're killing it in the North Main St wasteland and drawing in great crowds everyday. Now that's getting other likeminded businesses to move in (Gonzo), as well as expanding. Instead of just counting business that close, we should make sure we're counting businesses that close for reasons that the city can work on, like taxes. Pointing out shitty business closing as an example of the city failing does us all a diservice. Based strictly on personal experience, this was a shitty business that closed.

This business never had a chance here... It had nothing to do with the taxes either. It was good food too.

It was just the wrong time and the wrong place. I know it is not the city's job to tell someone this might not be the right location, but they should have in this case.

i feel bad for the business-owner.

Fear not, 7 months from now the City Hall skating rink will be populated with thirsty & hungry skaters. JIngle bells will be playing in the background and you'll be able to see all the way down the new Front St to Union Station

The ice making machinery will be in place...correct?

I will ask for the 2nd time. Are the street vendors out & about downtown or did the council in its infinite wisdom basically ex-communicate pushcart vendors from downtown?

So, i guess that's one less retail store owner potential pushcart vendors would have to ask approval of to set up his cart downtown. This keeps up and ther e will be no business w/in 500 ft (or whatever the paramweter is?) of any potential pushcart venue.

How do you define wrong time and wrong place Bill?

Seems to me two restaurants in the wrong place at the wrong time would be Evo and again, the Abbey. But from the sidelines the seem to be doing fine, no? maybe it's because they both bring an interesting menu and exceptional service to the table? How about Romaines in Northboro? Half the crowd I see in there are people from Worcester, that's more convenient than Main St?

I think you're giving City Park management way too much credit. Good business does very well in Worcester, unfortunately it's good business that's a rarity.

I define a restaurant that closed in three months as being the wrong time, wrong place and wrong restaurant.

How can you feel bad for the owner? I mean unless you know something that I don't. Unless the city approached him or actually gave him some advice or something. The fact that I went to this place at all proves my point. In the short time they were there they got three meals out of me. I would NEVER go to this place if it wasn't right outside my door. The food was good. The service SUCKED.

As I stated before in the Square One post, who is the demographic they were going after? You are the businessman Bill, please tell me.... who are these people in Worcester that drink shitty beer, listen to jazz and watch giant plasma televisions? Who are these people?

There is one immutable law of restaurant business:

If the executive chef quits after less than a month, the place is doomed.

I only drink Dixie Beer when listening to my John Coltrane 8 Tracks Gabe..

My self, I drink Gennesse beer ($9.99 per case?) when watching old John Holmes Porn movies.

Keep an eye on the T&G legals for a City of Worc RFP where the City will lease this restaurant site and then sublease it back to an aspiring restautatuer and provide $200,000 for a tenant fit up.

What the hell it is right next to 44 Front St.

Some have said it's the wrong time for a restaurant. I do have to agree, this economy is def. not the right time to get into the rest. bizz. Then again Downtown Worc. has proven time & again that it's never a good time to get into ANY bizz in DT Worc, including but no limited to Burger Kings and McDonalds.

Looks like Lady Di fell right into an easy column today, what with yesterdays news of the demise of City Park Grille. Stand in front of the White Hen pantry, keep your eyes and ears open and your pen moving. Walk around the corner and turn in your days work. 2-3 hours at the most for the day. An easy Monday.

Paulie , WTH happen to a 16 oz frosted mug of Guinness?

Hey where's Harry T. been of late? I assume he must have OD'ed on shiskabob this past weekend?

me,harry, gina and my ole lady overdosed on ouzo, greek vino..and lots of greek food on Saturday..we walked to the festival from my house and had a grand time..getting back home was the problemo..stopped off at Baba Sushi and had a Mai Tai night cap..

Paulie, I should have said shitty beer, and shitty jazz.

I still have no idea who they were trying to draw in there, but I am pretty sure whoever it was is not in abundance in Worcester County.

Paulie's Point of View said...

I am not so sure you are spot on about the music Gabriel..Chris Fitz played there twice and he is highly regarded locally having won best of Boston Blues Band one year..the Love Dogs played there also and their sax player is one of the best nationally..Chris has played at my local festival twice and at other events and the Love Dogs are playing at this years summer fest in Woo..in my own less than humble opinion the owner made an honest attempt to present good music downtown - neither band is cheapo to hire and both are in high demand at all New England Jazz & Blues fests...Harpoon was sold there and it is one of the most popular beers in New England so it seems they made at least one attempt to sell a quality beer made locally...the owner hails from Woo:>)

I am reading just here alone a 50/50 split on the quality of service and food and have heard from others that they liked the place...who is the reader to believe if they have not ventured into the joint?

Time will tell as to why the owner decided to call it quits..it is amazing that so much debate has been created here and on the T&G blog over one restaurant closing in Woo..

Paulie, just talking about the house music, and I would think a staunch promoter such as yourself would know that winning best of Boston anything pretty much means squat as far as quality, especially when it comes to music.
