First toast of the night is for Tyler..and our funeral procession around the block will be in style for "Tyler da Greyhound"!! Buddy will lead the whole damn thing for him!!
Not to diminish the loss of Tyler, but when I picked up the paper on Monday morning it was like somewhat had stabbed me in the heart when I read of the murdered Beccker College student, and i dodnt know this kid at all and have nothing to do with Becker either.
Aditionally Worc had another stabiing that weeeknd (I think??) and a shooting in GBV....the guy shot in head actually is surviving.
My point however is just back in August Worc's finest (per T&G) were touting the relatively calm streets that Worc was experiencing this summer (murder free??)...AND....AND...of course taking credit for summer free of any murders/voilence.....and their special patrols that were keeping the murder rate /violent crime rates down.
After last weeeknds incidents do we now heear these same folks taking the blame for last weekends vilence....Nope or at least I havent heard of it if they have taken the blame.
OK Ok the murder wasnt the cops fault any more than calm summer streets are ther result of their specialzed patrols or whatever......my point is that too often too many public officiaLS TAKE credit for these occurences (Murder free summer e.g.) that just happen to oocur on their watch and really have nothing to do with policies/procedures that they may have implemented.
Kinda like Jordan Levy claiming credit for a good economy or a new building or a new roadway that just happened to be built on his watch (as a ceremonial mayor).
When do the stockholders (taxpayers) and the B. O. D. (councillors) of the city get an update on WPD's Paygate? I just want an update or a progress report not a final report.
Once again, how much are we spending on this paper chase.......examining, photocopying, re-filing, etc all this paper............vs........it now costs the T&G $4,000 to get their documents request filled. I dont like this indirect form of subterfuge coming out of the concrete bunker at Lincoln Sq.
Did i mention on here a few weesk ago that I heard the Foxboro fire dept chief has told his minions..........no more taking the 20 ton fire truck to Subway for lunch or dinner.........costs too much for fuel........ditto's for Auto Zone runs and post office trips.
Senor Jahn..this is where you and I taken two different turns in the road...how can you make a statement that calm on the street has nothing to do with the copphahs??
I'm living close to the heart of the nonsense in he city and I am seeing the calm every day changing due to more presence, speedier response, general perception finally taking hold that this nonsense will no be put up with..it is no just the coppahs it is the citizens bu both groups are working together..
Last week we had a nasty bout of one of the local lads on those damn scoootahs...he drove up and down Winfield for hours on end all day for a week..it took awhile but we got the matter resolved..the beat guy handling the issue came to my house to talk about it and let me tell you the conversation was night and day from the past..he was young, listened and understood that this was a quality of life issue and I knew he understood that there are folks working to push this shit out.
Yer statements are just reflecting basic human nature..who the hell evah gets up and states."we screwed up"???
Worcester is a fairly safe city anyway..Somerville in the 60's, 70's & 80's on a good day made Woostah today look like Piccidilly Palace:>)
I am seeing much less thievery..I couldn't leave a can of coke on my back porch a few years ago without it being stolen in 3.5 minutes..I actually had a lad comment on "the view" from my rear porches yesterday while we were having a beer:>) The lots in he rear are being maintained better than ever before as is mine..I can't begin to tell you how much police interaction assisted in this mate.
Give some credit where it's due mate even if you dislike the organization...
BTW..you coming to my NOLA Fest??
You can sit next to Harry and the pole I have constructed for him
Nola Fest sounds great and I will try and make it. We are having our 30th Anniversary Celebration for Worcester Fitness located at 440 Grove Street free to the public on Friday starting with a cookout at 4pm also there are things to do for the kids and a concert hopefully if it doesn't rain to hard out side with Probable Cause at 7pm. If any body wants to get warmed up for the Nola Fest please stop by. I am sure some Cajun cooking will taste great after I clean up Saturday morning.
Paulie, my point was that too many stand up and take credit for the good things that happen and when the exact opposite occurs.......no one takes the fall for it..................Chief gemme cant have it both ways...............and Gemme, in a T&G interview thsi summer calimed the credit for a summmer that was basically unmarred my murders & /or violence........now we just coming off a bad weekend of voilence..........if you take the credit for the good that occurs on your watch...........well you know what I mean......cant have it both ways.........or please dont grandstand for the public/T&G when things are going good...........i like those who do their jobs (so called public service) and keep their mouths shut...........as opposed to bragging about being a fire dept that puts out fires & rescues people........WTH.............do those at St Gobain brag about gringing wheel quality or those at Wyman Gordon brag b/c their airplane components arent falling out of the sky............
Where's my Paygate progress report?? I am tired of the blue beetle gnawing/stealing my tax dollaars.
Do you take the credit for a 65 degree day with no wind and sunny skies and no rain on one of your race days?
BTW I do hope the weather works out for you on Saturday. I believe that I will be on CC this weekend, unfortunately........may have to settle for the piano player at baxters instread of a Nawleeens fest
police-safe summer, st. gobain wheelsand weather is like comparing Ms. Bündchen to Phylis Dillah..remember her?
It is easy for me to understand the Chief taking credit for a safe summer when in fact we had one and the beefed up services from the WPD are palpable in the urban neighborhoods..having an isolated weekend of violence is gonna happen in a city..would I expect the Chief to get up and say it was his fault, his staff's or the officers cause some punk pulled a knife on a college kid or one got wacked on Main South-no of course not cause it aint their fault..you are a fairly on-track guy most of the time with your sermons and I agree on many of your points most of the time..this particluar one is not holding water with me mate-crime we experienced in this city on a regular basis in the past is way down..I haven't had a break in in three years (knock on wood) a door kicked in in four years..the creeps around the hood in numbahs is down...the drug houses are less and getting their own doors kicked in by the WPD and with regularity now instead of mine and other good folks:>)
I to am waiting on the "possible" overtime abuse issue like everyone else but do I expect to hear from the Chief on it until something has been decided or uncovered-NO..I do expect more from our City Manager & City Council on this issue..and this is what should be more alarming to citizens that we have not.
Again, vendor cart issue got more blog time & newspaper stories than the issue of "possible" overtime abuse from important media folks in this city...
I have tackled the WPD on detail issues in person not via the media...won a wee battle just in the way they intereacted with me this year and it was welcome:>) But I also know how to separate issues...many in this city do not:>)
I believe the Chief and PD have been doing a good job in this city....they like many departments including he city manager in this city are starting from scratch and are pretty much creating a new city and culture in Worcester and it aint gonna happen overnight mate..it kill's me to type this to
cause I have been waiting as long as many and have suffered financially like many..
This city is still in a huge clean-up phase..hopefully it will be ready for the next boom that will happen..they always do..Worcester has never been positioned well for these booms..it has pretty much missed the last two and hopefully it will not for the next one when I am in my 50's:>)..it missed it in my late 20's/30's and 40's:>)
See that letter to the City Council below..this is new stuff for Worcester...and more is coming from guys and gals finally teaming up together!
I am still a strong believer that this city needs more urban Pols who live in the urban core....few takers tho and this is a problem..we could use one or two real sensible women or men on the council who are new to the ciy but now the city...maybe have kid's and definitely own a house and understand what a commitment this is in the urban core.
I laughed at similiar comment's made last night by Councilor's Haller & Palmieri about the citizen anger out here at government...did they realize they were speaking of themselves?
thanks for highjacking my NOLA Fest:>) remind me to make sure that piano in Baxters has a bad key (I'll be on the Cape tomorrow for business)
Anyway, thanks to Wild Will for posting.."I'm From Worcester" did also and I am most grateful (thinking back to my "Dead" days)
We are on regardless of the rain...I'm having this festival and even if no one shows up-I'm gonnna have a great ime:>)
Paulie:
I say you formally invite the councilors.
Bill
Hey invite the CDC chieftans, too........WTH a cultural event occuring in their revitalized neighborhoods = they s/b present.
Paulie, once again.............i dont nec. blame the cops for any of the criminal activity (except Paygate)........and I frankly, unfortuanltely I do expect there will be violent criminal activity, esp in urban areas.............
My bone of contention is do not take credit for the good.............unless u stand up and take the balme when the bad happens.......
Bsaiclly ST+U and do your job !!!!...........civil servants are no different then those of us in the private sector..............my work colleagues dont get kudos for basiclly doing their jobs everyday...............so why should cops, firemen & teachers get prima dona treatemnt for doing theirs.............just b/c they are public employeees does not diefy them....nor do we have to have every cop, sherriff, statie, and fireman blocking Planatation St..........lights ablazing, tying up traffic in front of Mercadantes everytime one of them passes from this vale of tears.
Sorry if that offends anyone.......it's time for some to come down off their high horses
Also being forewarned is being forearmed...........re: Harry and this pole????? .....could this be construed to be criminal activity and/or a civil licensing voilation...........
Jahn,
I agree with Paulie on this one. Chief Gemme and City Manager O’Brien finally get it and are putting Worcester in a position to finally capitalize on the next wave. As Paulie so eloquently pointed out it will come and this time, IMHO, Worcester will be ready to jump on the train.
Without a doubt, Worcester is one of the safest cities in the Northeast. Does that mean we won’t experience violent spikes like we did this past weekend? No, but I’ll still take our city over many others. Compare Worcester’s crime statistics with any other city (even Providence) and we stack up very well.
As for standing up when things are less than rosy, Chief Gemme was on with Mike O’Brien the other morning on the WTAG Morning news with Jim Polito addressing the issue. He said (and I paraphrase) that he was very upset with what happened over the weekend especially the unfortunate stabbing death of the Becker College student. The Chief went on to say that the WPD will take what they learned from their relatively safe summer approach and apply them to the September/October timeframe. They will implement immediately a Fall Impact Program comprising 4 commanding officers and 14 police officers. Gemme also said that any violence will not be tolerated and the WPD will do everything possible to have a safe city 12 months of the year.
As for NOLA fest, I “heard” that Paulie is using the festival as an opportunity to announce his candidacy for the City Council. Paul Collyer for City Council! Oh well…I can dream, can’t I?
For teh 3rd or 4th time now...........my point is that those who claim responsibilty for a drop in crimes ...should also claim responsibilty for a rise in crime? It's a double edged sword. Gemme was on radio in August and in paper too claiming his program(s) dropped the crime rate..........not quite.....IMO the drop just happend to occur on his watch....just last weeekend also occurred on his watch
I do agree for a city our size....crime seems to be relativley less than say a Hartford, for example
Just went trolling on city website re Fall leaf collection program and there s big banner headline:
FALL LEAVE COLLECTION PROGRAM COMPLETE
Huh?
It continues "teh fall leaf collection program started on ++/++/07 has been completed" Stale headline?
Also didnt see any mention of Direct Airon the city website home page..........I would think it s/b there?
Paulie, I heard there was some kind of get together for Archie....guess it just never made the paper......he definitely did help give the city some of its urban flavor..............
yah...Gus told me the other day...I should have went down to the PB aftah his deah but didn't..Gus and a few others raised the scratch to have a formal mass for him..good for Archie...
Ahhhh , nothing like taking a trip to POLE-land in the fall !!!
See y'all on Saturday, cher ...

I'll leave the poliics to others..not sure being able to put on a few road races, post some opinions on blogs or beat back the forces of evil down here qualify for being a city councilor:>)I'll leave that up to those smartah than me:>)
I will toast to Tyler tho:>)I like dogs:>)
BTW..I am flattered even if it is a joke Dave Z:>)
Only mi muddah and mi ole lady say nice thinhs to me.
I hope everyone makes the festival including you Tim-beer on me:>)..even my bloggah foes..nice time to relax and enjoy another great Woostah urban experience:>)
You know I understand where jahn is coming from. By the way need we forget that over the summer there was an attempted murder right out in front of City Hall in broad daylight, so it wasn't the perfect summer that the poe poe is bragging about.
That said, they do an awesome job and the city is kept pretty safe.
That said they really have no kind of grasp on what is bad and what is good. The city is ridiculous in this aspect, holding a grudge against KJ Baarons because a "packey" doesn't fit their grand plan for Washington Sq or giving the Armsby Abbey a hard time because some other established North Main businesses ask them to.
The fact that some of the people making decisions at City Hall and Lincoln Square are totally ignorant of the difference between establishments like the Armsby Abbey and KJ Baaron's and establishments like 3 G's and Kirsch Liquors and how the first two figure into the cultural make up and overall regional appeal of our city and how they are just as important as the Hanover and the Worcester Art Museum. Right now one of them is bringing a demographic to Downtown that the city has been trying to draw for years and the other is giving that demographic a touchstone if they decide to stay.
So yes, our police department does a fantastic job. As our city starts to gentrify though some serious cultural education is going to need to go on with the police force so that when they see things they don't understand they do not jump to conclusions.
THAT SAID....
I would like to see better coverage on crime by our city media including the harrassment of Gemme, O'Brien and Lukes for quotes and statements about things such as a college student getting murderded two streets over from Highland St. Something like this and something like the Downtown stabbing over the summer are big deals and the city needs to make very big and very public statements about these things literally in the press and symbolicly with the actions of the WPD and then use the media to their advantage. When was the last time there was a perp walk in Worcester? Do we know yet who is responsible for either of these crimes? What the motives were?
Joe West Boylston and Bobby Holden need to know that they don't need to be scared to death of setting foot anywhere between Webster and Chadwick Squares. As ridiculous as it is in reality, the other reality is that they actually do think it is scary and that perception, along with things like sidewalks should be high on the agenda of the City Council, the manager's office, and the Cheif's office because the perception vs the reality of Worcester is a big big problem and as we all know, perception is reality.
Vibrancy+Aesthetics+Low Crime will equal more people wanting to spend time in our urban core.
By the way, I look forward to meeting a bunch of you silly bloggers on Saturday.
For you silly bloggers
