Juan Williams fired by NPR

Juan Williams was fired from his job as senior news analyst from National Public Radio for remarks regarding Muslims and terrorism on “The O’Reilly Factor,” said The Washington Post.

Host Bill O’Reilly asked Juan Williams on Monday’s show if he thought the U.S. was facing a “Muslim dilemma.” Juan Williams said he becomes “worried” and “nervous” when he sees people in Muslim-style dress on airplanes. NPR said in a statement that Juan Williams’ comments “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”

Bill O’Reilly also said on Monday’s show that it was “the cold truth” that “jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet,” according to The Guardian.  Juan Williams, who is African American, often writes on racial issues.

I guess an employment contract supersedes free speech under the Constitution?

Maybe Williams could get a job at WTAG?

I agree, time to put Levy out to pasture. Some folks just do not know when it is time to go.

Don't always agree with Jordan but I feel our local radio guys (Hank, Peter, Jim and Jordan) have done an excellent job this year helping us know the candidates.

WTAG isn't hiring anyone. Their parent company Clear Channel has purged this once proud Worcester radio station of just about everything that made this station great. The last straw for me was when they showed George Brown the door and reduced their news department to one, Sherman Whitman. Do you know that the midday news is pre-recorded by Greg Byrne from sister station WSRS? And the afternoon news with either Randy Gorbman or Brendan O'Riordan is pre-recorded via their sister station in Rochester, N.Y.? If you don't believe me here is the link for their Rochester station WHAM-AM 1180.

WTAG in it's present incarnation is to radio what the Worcester Telegram & Gazette is under the New York Times ownership. Neither company cares about serving the greater Worcester area, just the bottom line.

With WTAG's lean staff now, IMHO they would never be able to do blanket coverage of a major news event like during the infamous ice storm. Think about it, when a major story broke, how many times did we hear George Brown delivering local news even on the weekends until one of their news anchors could make it in. And don't tell me we live in a 24-hour news cycle and can get news anywhere making stations like WTAG obselete. I don't buy that argument especially on the local level.

Although WCRN has local ownership, their not much better at serving the Metro area. At best they have 2 or 3 local news headlines during the Peter Blute show by Hank Stolz. And if something happens after Hank's midday report from 11 - Noon forget about hearing it on WCRN. In fact you would probably read about in the next day T&G before you would hear the news on WCRN.

It's really sad because when WCRN first switched to a news/talk format I was excited. I thought that with the increased competition on the radio dial, it would make them both step up their "game". Wow, was I ever wrong.

Well said David.

Just an side here. I left my radio at a place I was working this past summer and I have been w/o a radio since then. Still obvioulsy have the car radio. I know I have oterh radios somehwere in the cellar or attic, but I have not bothered to look for them.

Fact of the matter is, I am going w/o radio in my house now and I do not miss it. Never thought I could have lived w/o it. It's actaully quieter and less distracting. Could I go w/o it in my car...no. It's funny how when forced to do w/o something that we think we like, that maybe we dont like or need it all that much.

I was into Morning drive radio wcrn, wtag and to lesser extent Wrko depending of course on the topic at hand and of course Howie's afternoon drive.

Regardless I still think Levy s/b put out to pasture. The guy likes to hear himself talk and he all too often is w/o callers.

Polito makes the grade in my book. I just wish he would lose his fellow countryman every Wednesday morning or what ever day he has him on. The guy just giggles when confronted with issues he'd rather dodge. He really belongs back at Harpers "Bizarre" (circa 1970's) with his pony tail and his politics.

I understand he's been hired by Fox.

Jahn,
No radio at home now. Interesting.
Okay, so how's your TV intake?
Increased or decreased since the departure of your radio?

Steve Ty for the inquiry.

Yes I still have TV. I gave up the occasional 900pm or 1000pm crime dramas in the last few years. Once we had 3 CSi's and 4 Law & Orders i kinda threw in the towel. Still do an occassional FBI profilers. I was looking forward to the new .."Book Em Dano Murdaaah 1" series.....but that remake sux, IMO

Now it's more Fox at 900pm , depending on who is featured. I generally blow off the Grate Ameriken Panil portion and surf around for Amer Pickers or Ice Road Truckers. 1/2 the time I am passed out by 1015pm anyway .......only to awaken to Greta who I swear has a somewhat diff hairdo & color every night Even I spotted the Botox the 1st time I ever saw her. How old is he anyway? I always liked those German blonds. The Scandanavian ones I was too short for :( I often wonder how the AMer pickers even pay for thier gasoline, let alone make any money.....Reality TV???...LOL????

Oddly enough I never started watching Hannity until Obuma got elected. I guess one could say I am part of that 70% I read about recently
