Harry T post

According to this website:

http://www.canamleague.com/09scores.php

Can Am Baseball Championship Series attendance:

Game 1 in Worcester: 642
Game 2 in Worcester: 741
Game 3 in Quebec: 5011
Game 4 in Quebec: 3744

642 and 741 for a championship series? Once again...where was the Chamber of Commerce? ... where was the Visitor's bureau? ... a chance to showcase the city to a Canadian province and we can't even fill the stadium at 20% capacity? A 2 for 1 deal ... a discount for city employees ... public unions... St. V's employees, UMASS employees, etc would have filled the stadium. Where was the marketing for this?...by the team?...by the city?...Chamber of Commerce? ...visitor's bureau?

An embarassment if you ask me...

Just my 2 cents...

1383 attendance for 2 championship games in Worcester over 2 days...who knows how many were paid. 1000 paid attenance in the slowest week of the summer for the NOLAfest ... Worcester needs more shameless self promoters !!!

I got to admit I am embarassed by those numbers. At the same time I did know that they were in the Championship but had no idea which game or where.

We needed a Rex Ryan type call out to the people of Worcester to support the team.

I think a lot of the fault lies with our media in this city or I should say lack of media! Yes, I know I’ve beaten this refrain a thousand times before but it needs to be said again and again and again…!

Granted, the Chamber of Commerce and the visitor’s bureau should be beating the drums every chance they get but our media needs to be called on it, too.

The Tornadoes draw well during the regular season although I have heard they were down this season. The same can’t be said during their two post season runs.

Going into the stretch run they lost (IIRC) 11 games in a row. I believe many fans didn't think they even had a chance to make the playoffs. And if you relied on the local media to tell you, good luck. Most mornings the T&G would bury the Tornado game story & box score on the 2nd or 3rd page of the sports section. And WCRN usually ignored them completely because their competitor (WTAG) carried the games. And I don’t recall our weekly suburban paper, Holden…I mean Worcester Magazine promoting them either.

You can bet that the T&G will run it on page 1 if the team and/or the league itself folds. The Brockton Rox are in dire financial straits and if they fold which IMHO is entirely possible, the league would be hard pressed to go forward with only 5 teams.

Then the media would be quick to point their fingers at the lack of support from Metro Worcester area baseball fans.

So true... I found out after the fact that they were even in the championship game. Where were the city boosters to get the word out? I would have gone to both games...

Oh well...

I remember when the Worcester Sharks were playing the Providence Bruins in the playoffs last winter... Providence was banging out 7,000+ for those playoff games...Worcester? ... maybe 1,000 (me , the MRs. and 4-Rilla included in the 1,000) ...and we were PAYING customers! BTW, there were MORE Providence Bruins fans in the DCU Center than were Worcester Sharks fans. Something is broken and needs to be fixed !!!

I believe you are incorrect dave z attendance has been down last two years....demographics guys...folks who live in the cm burbs do not want to come to the city en masse and the 25percent poor and 25percent elderly who do not spend is the problem.....quit blaming the media.....how can we expect it to be excited if the population of citizens is dead....cape league is drawing more

Just another business that is gonna fold or move.....real problem here folks

This is the city that is excited about low income housing in the chevalier building in the canal district......we had better start having some real discussions in this city before it is to late

Allegient leaving like it did is becoming so much more revealing every day...if you look at it strictly from a business perspective and leave the political and personal bullshit behind....I am starting to have my doubts about this unum deal...irregardless of dave a's premonitions

How many of these posters went to a game? I could only get to one playoff game because I had to work. I also went to 4 regular season games. how about the rest of you. If you like baseball, why don't you save the Tornadoes as a favorite. They send me emails all the time.

I respectfully disagree Paulie. The media has to shoulder some of the blame, too. Hell if it wasn’t for this blog and your blog, a lot of us would be even further in the abyss as to what is happening in this city.

The media serves Central Massachusetts and should be promoting the city to the entire region as part of their civic responsibility. As I have mentioned in the past, when there was competition between the Worcester Telegram and the Evening Gazette, everyone knew what was going on within the metro area. They fell all over themselves to get the stories out both the grim and “feel good” pieces.

The media has the tools to promote this region better than anyone. Even though newspapers and radio have dwindling numbers nationwide, they still have the numbers that Bill and you could only dream of having that read your blogs.

OK, so maybe the Chamber and visitors bureau should bear some blame. Maybe even the local radio media personalities for not touting it enough (or at all?). But when all the dust settles, one has to ask why didnt the Tornadoes buy some media spots?

Maybe some media spots have to be bought in advance and the Tornadoes have no way of knowing if they're even going to be in the playoffs weeks in advance.

So it's solely the citys job to promote the Tornadoes?

The team has been given a great deal on a staduim to play in ( HC's Pilot Payment(s) to the city?). I suspect they get a break on required police details and they have Glodis's Guys providing free services, etc. How many more handouts do they want?

I mean WTF, who do the Tornadoes think they are getting all these freebies from the tax payers.....the IAFF'ers or the MTA or the WPD?. Yup, I flunked all the required exams [g]

Harry T,

There were more Providence Bruin fans in the DCU Center because the Bruins fan base covers all of New England and they will support the Baby B's just like Red Sox fans support the PawSox. So the Providence crowd is large all of the time, there is no way they'd be that large if it was the Providence Kings (an LA farm system). But Worcester is broken, we all know that. But it's tough to compare them to the Bruins, their fan base is just too large around here to compare them to the Sharks.

PS

Just curious...did the Worcester World cup soccer tournament at Foley Stadium outdraw a championship baseball game at Fitton Field?

I have season tickets to the patriots and don't go....I do not have to go to a nadoes game to walk the talk:)........I spend a considerable amount of my income in wootown and pay property tax on multiple properties....I'm running when most are sitting down on
a park bench waiting for a handout...this is the fn problem in this city....can't have an fn conversation
I don't wear silk panties either but I can still understand the economic and social ramifications of a victoria secret store I town

Paulie just doesn't want to admit he hates being stuck in the Foxboro traffic for 4 hours after a Patriots game...

Paulie loves being stuck in Foxboro post game traffic. What should be a 2 pint ride back to Wootown now becomes 22 pint ride.

Then there's also pit stops at Lafayette House, The Stadium Lounge, Luciano's and Larry's Package (Rte 126 exit in Bellingham).

Beware, Luciano's does not have an affinity for Winter Hill, Irish mob types. The boys from Boston and from Providence have been known to meet there as it's a convenient 1/2 way point. Stay in the lounge though and you should be safe.
