Lujons

After 55 years, they are closing located on 35 Pleasant Street. Please stop by and help Andre (pictured on the left) clear out his inventory this month. Great guy and he will be missed downtown. Had a chance to do a quick blog interview:

  1. Sorry to hear that you are closing. Since I joined the workforce in 1986, there has been a switch to casual dress away from the suit and tie, which has obviously hurt your business. that said have you seen a shifting of the workforce out of downtown Worcester? Yes, there is nobody left downtown.

  2. Were you hoping to see CitySquare open and make a difference in your business? Yes, since 2004 when it was announced.

  3. What do you think of the Chamber of Commerce, right across the street? The chamber is useless.

  4. What advice would you give to downtown planners? We need more stores and housing.

  5. Tell us about your closing sale? Everything must go, up to 75% off until August 1st.

  6. What are your plans after Lujons? Looking for a job..

WOW! This sucks... too bad...I used to shop there when I worked at WCIS back in the late 1980s and early 1990s...along with Shack's, Armando's , etc ...he said it best ... the jobs left downtown (bank HQ's , insurance HQ's, etc...) ...now we are just one big branch office rather than a corporate headquarter like we were back in that era (WCIS, People's Bank, Home Federal Savings Bank, Mechanic's Bank, Paul Revere Insurance, Worcester County National Bank,Guaranty Bank etc, etc, etc)...at least all those company headquarters drove the economic engine...now everyone is just in a branch/clerical position at whatever skeletons are left over from those days... along with being overworked and underpaid(today's downtown employees)... those 'days' you had plenty of executive/mid level mgmt level people in downtown who shopped the Lujon's , SHack's, etc and would go out to sit down lunches rather than just 'grab a sandwich'... now I'm just showing my age by reminicing! ...speaking of showing...back then 1980's/early 1990's you had incredible rubbernecking scenery, too in the downtown area !!!!! :-)

Although it is sad to see any business close, one has to wonder why this store didn't simply move when business started declining.

Allegient did and got lambasted...this question could be asked of anyone who has eeked it out in WooTown Steve

Closing his store is a form of moving? I think at this point in his life, he does not want to start a new business somewhere else and just wants to get a job working for someone.

Could you imagine what $$$$$$ the city could have made if they bought Allegiant shares at the IPO?
Let's just say thre wouldn't be a budgetary crisis...
