Supermarket Update

Shaws sells all their Ct stores. Mass stores next.... Rumor has it Hannaford may be interested in their stores. Also new upscale Wegert Supermarket going in on Route 20 in Northboro acrosss from the Driving Range.

This year s going to be very tough year for the Supermarkets in Worcester. I say at least one, most likely two will close.

Hannafords is a great supermarket chain with very competitive pricing and great customer service. If they buy the Shaws locations it would be a big win for the consumer.

My executive chef tells me if you shop all the stores, buy on sale, and use coupons all the stores in Worc are reasoanably competitive w/each.

"GENERALLY" Big Y is most expensive and Price Rite the least expensive. However in Price Rite (PR) other "non quantitative urban factors" come into play and everything you want is not always available in PR Enuff said.

BTW, the part of that interview with the WMRB that I did catch Roberta (I think it was Roberta being interviewed) siad their studies show that 40% of Worc's job base is in education and hospitals (or medical?)

So Worc, s/b on bended knees to these two industries instead of trying to hold them up with Pilot Pistol.

Can you imagine Worc w/o these businesses. It would be like Cape Cod w/o beaches & Irish Pubs.

These are businesses that draw a disporportionate amt. of professional, well paying jobs to Worc. Plus they are super clean industries. I ask you what's worse, heavy industrial manufacturing and its fall out or a few noisey Saturday nights with drunken college kids? Additionally, these industries are propbaly two of the most recession/depression proof lines of work.

BTW Signman, did you mail your business calling card over to Belleview St lately ? I think it's 7-9 Belleview. 01609?

My wife shops at hannaford. She tried the super walmart when they opened, and just tried the new market basket this weekend.

Walmart was not cheaper on any items. Produce was terrible. Long long lines. Many brands not sold. Lots of processed foods.

Market Basket she tells me the prices were the same for the in house brands compared with hannafords in house brands. Cheaper on some brand name items, but more expensive on others. Produce was good, but hannaford was a little better. Being further away she is sticking with hannaford.

Stop and shop and Shaws are always more expensive in all cases. She tried price chopper, but does not like buying TEN of one item to save a buck.

If this goes through it will be good for consumers. The war will be between price chopper - hannaford - and market basket.
