Local Contractors Part 2

Burwick and May Street, I need to ask again does anyone know anyone local subs working either of these two projects, representing between 25,000,000 to 30,000,000 in development costs?

Wait till the constr work around here reaaly dries up in the next few years........the Union trademen may very well be asking Jim McGovern was all his gov't subidized housing in Worc isnt using union labor..........anyone ever hear of a PLA for a low income housing project????...........I haven't...........I think it would actually be good to use union labor on these jobs...............that way if the cost of labor goes up due to using union labor.....then the the # of units of LIH wouldhave to decrease...............and/or project funding would have to decrease.......

Somehow I think Jim Mc has told union labor that LIH constr is off limits.......otherwise why don't we see union protests on these job sites........????

Saw a sign on the fence around the back of the Burwick bldg. for JM Environmental w/ a Worcester phone number...

JM envirnonmental.. You are correct they are a local business located on Beacon Street.

I believe one of the principals of JM Environmental is one of the principals in Mason Winfield LLC, the low income housing project on Mason Street.

Supposedly, Another of the alleged principals in Mason Winfield is related to or married to someone who works as a staffer in Mcgovern's office.

Supposedly it a Stephen Parker.

Small, Small, small world, this lovely little cluster ++++ called low income housing...........huh.....almost DisneyWorld like and the money falls out of the sky for these dev'ers of LIH in an almost fantasy world like way. Unreal !

BTW Mason Winfeild was supposed be started in Sept, 2005.....all they have done since then is give the site an EPA cleaning on my tax dime.....I think they got really cold feet and missed the real estate market of 2005-2007. Something is not right over there ......I got a suspision the private equity partner(s) dont want to go forward with it...esp given that Cambridger Hacker is 82% vacant is holding on only by virtue of my the Catholic's generosity from up on MT St James.

And also given that City Builders site is ramping up toward constr. soon, too....... and we got 42 units coming online at May/Main Sts old Piano Factory....Worc Common Gr. says stay tuned ......

Burwick is partially funded with union pension funds. Contractor (Lee Kennedy) is from the Boston area and has a great reputation- but is obviously not local. Most subcontractors, but not all, on this project are using union labor. The cost of these units will make them overpriced- and someone will take a hit. Taxpayers will be included.

As far as May Street, most of the contractors are not local but most are not union. Some good firms and sme not so good ones.

I think the $25-30 mil may be a bit high, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Keep your eyes open as the projects that do get going in 2009 in and around worcester will be dominated by non- Worcester area contractors and subcontractors.Just look at the new Law library or the new super WalMart.

The money goes out of town and is spent out of town. Wouldn't it be great to see most of the money stay local and go to local stores, car/truck dealers, restaurants, bars, insurance agents, etc.. The Worcester Local first and Buy Worcester folks need to be aware and speak our on this. The CoC is nowhere on this stuff and the majority of the city council is in the back pocket of the union machine.

just a typical day in the life of a Worcester taxpayer.........

I don't think the 25 to 30 million figure is that far off... Also I am not saying any of these contractors are bad.

My point is, as you say, that we should practice what we preach especially when the City of Worcester supports these projects with variances, waived fees, free sidewalks and HOME funds. How about using some local contractors?

How many new car/truck dealers do we have left in Worc now? BTW, the rumor of Duddie Diamond going out to Rte 20 on Jan 1.....how's that coming along......soon????......anyone hear or see anything...???

I would have thought the law library would be public money and union/prevailing wage would apply...........unless the new Landlord is doing the tenant fit up on his own dime and building it into the monthly rent..????

Walmart is private money and If I was Walmrt I'd go with lowest qualified bidder...all these CVS's & Walg's same thing...........I think often CVS & Walg's will get hooked up with one GC to build a number of different stores......so the GC's on many of these jobs are always from out of town no matter where they're building and often they bring their own subs that they already know with them......not unlike all of....us they go with known players.

Also what good sized GC's do we now have left in Worc, besides Cutler........Cutler still is based in Worc?????? The 3 Grangers of yesteryear are long gone....one is still out on Rte 9 in Shrews, last I knew. Madigan gone??? Others I am sure I have forgotten???
Sad fact is other than Cutler I think we've lost quite a few good sized GC's that could build schools & the like.

Bill Randell said...

Fran Madigan most definately not gone. Actually bought a new place on Chandler, the Old Weepin Willies--was that the name of it??

Besides GC what about electricians, plumbers, HVAC guys?? Drive by these sites--not a local guy for miles...

The worst part is at five oclock they drive home and spend their pay in their respective home towns. Would be nice to keep this money in the City of Worcester.

I saw a $9.99 offer to turn tires out front and the convenient store across the street with a new sign saying they acceped EBT Cards..oy vey!

Bill Randell said...

I heard another story about Duddie might be in the Sunday paper

Anonymous said...

Paulie, by turning tires do you mean rotating them on the car for 9.99?

Problem is places like the wholesale clubs (non local bizz's) do it for free if you buy the tires there.

I admit have bought tires from wholesale clubs, but who ever bothers to rotate their tires today?

David Z. said...

I still rotate mine!

Paulie's Point of View said...

SEnor Jahn..I really did not check on the particulars..only was chuckling to myself how there was the two signs almost across from each other..one accepting EBT cards and one offering a cheap deal to rotate tires at a car dealership..seemed like a chump thing a a big dealership

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Paulie I got your point.

Woweee dave............not too many people do that anymore, nor do they have the itme it takes to bring car in for even a free rotation. I understand you can get 100,000 miles out of an 80,000 mile tire if your rotate them.

Paulie I didn tknow ther ewas a conv. store opposite Diamond.

When is the Stop & shop going in there? [g]

Paulie I heard your buddy Havana Jim McGovern talking on radio yesterday about something they i know irks you !!!!! More foodstamp, etc money he wants to see in any bailout type bills or any other kind of legislation. When are we going to pull the plug on this joker.

Question on shoveling law.

If the snow stops at 10am and then it rains until 10pm when Do i have to clear my walk by.......w/in 10hrs of the end of ice/snowstrom or w/in 10 hrs of teh end of rain storm?

Maybe Phil Plamieri could enlighten me??

Bill Randell said...

Jahn:

I think since it rained longer then it snowed, it would no longer be considered a snow storm but be classified as a rain storm.

Thus the snow ordinance would no longer apply.

it is not directly across from Diamond..the new EBT is what really stood out and then I saw the Diamond discount..been seeing a lot of those we accept EBT signs lately

I also heard the more food stamps and nutrition program statement from our Congressman
