Struck Cafe

Just tried to eat at the Struck Cafe, but they were "closed for renovations". Maybe I am being naive, but how many restaurants do you know that close for renovations in January right after the license fee is due to the City of Worcester?

I hope that I am wrong and that they are "closed for renovations", but if they are in fact closed I wish them luck in the future at whatever they do. The owner and his daughter were always very nice and gave great service.

Central supply's owner purchased Nissen bakery on 146. He calls his organization the Granite Group

I was at Wild Willy's Burgers the other day and overheard the owner tell a customer that the city wanted them to pay a full year's beer/wine license just to sell beer and wine for one week (X-mas - New Year's). They then told the city they would wait until New year's day to sell beer/wine rather than pay a whole year's license fee to sell for one week.

Way to go city of Worcester! How is that army of meter maids coming along?!?!?

My sister went there last week and they told her that she couldn't be served a beer. When she asked why they said the license didn't go into effect until Jan-08. She then ordered a coke. The bad thing is she blamed Willy's.

In my business we prorate all the time. We also give away the last couples of days each month whenever someone show intreset in becoming customer.

I picked up my WOMAG this morning (Fri) and see the story about Condron/Central Supply/Nissen Bakery.......that story is what i think I caught the tail end of on Stoltz show Wednes evening.

I was quite surprised to read the piece on snow removal and be informed by Mr Moylan (per Zoback) that the cost of snow removal "the current budget of $2.1M includes sand, salt, and hired contractors.....(and) does not include the cost of department (DPW) manpower and overtime"....

WOW!!! What Enron-esque bookeeping that is!

So bill, so if you get a copy of the city budget or financials....remember... the snow plow/removal line item does not include the cost of DPW manpower...this is absolutely unbelievable...what does our new chief financial officer think of that???

I wonder if the cost of leave/yard waste pick up in the spring and fall includes only the cost of hired equipment/contractors and not the cost of city DPW personnel?

Also, I assume the cost of city equipment is probably not included in snow removal

So here's a list of what I assume is NOT NOT NOT included in city snow removal costs:

1. DPW plowers staight wages.
2. DPW plowers OT wages
3. Foreman straight weages
4. Foremen OT wages
5. DPW 'ee benefits:
a. Health Ins
b. Pension
c. Sick Pay.
d. Holiday pay
e. Vacation Pay
f. Personal leave
e. Injured on Duty pay
6. City Equipment costs
a. Mechanc wage& bennies
b. Fuel
c. Cost of the equipment
d. Repairs
e. Insurance
f. Interest on Equip debt
g. Garage costs

This is truly unreal and a complete misrepresentation to the taxpayers. Mr Moylan maybe a good engineer, but he needs to hire a financial person to properly determine his operational costs.

Forgive me, but I repeat myself with another example...........I guess the cost of weekly garbage pickup is zero b/c it's all done with city DPW workers & equipment?

If we don not know what the hell something costs us, how the hell can we properly run the city? Chelsea, Spfld,....is worc next Spfd invested $12M in subprime mortgages and it's now worth $1M.Spfld blames Merrill Lunch.......Merrill blames Spfld....File Under: The Blame Game

Add Wendy's on grafton St....it's now a DeAgelos ...I guess thats a break even??.....likewise for Eddys Pub it's .....now Willy's

Agian I do not fault the city for many of these closings. Businesses, esp small retail, do sometimes tend to have short shelf lives ......sometimes others like a Spags (large retail) last a lifetime

I wonder if Union Station Restaurant or Union Blues or TiNova got any pro rated "package deals" on License fees, given that the city was involved in selling or leasing to these businesses?

Assuming here that these businesses probably didnt all initiate operations on Januarry 1St.

Does the Hand It over Theatre hold a license to imbibe adult libations on premises?
