I can undestand how there is a problem with the non-accessory wall murals, but I think it be be straigthened out. BUT " impose a moratorium on new wall signs, illuminated signs, digital display signs and non-accessory signs, in any zoning district in the city".
This make any sense signman?? If I open a new business and want to buy a new message board to advertise my new business during this moratorium signman, can I put a sign up??

What a business-friendly move. When will they ban cash registers?
I wonder if political signs are exempt? Are political signs considered accessory?
If Puaile runs for Elmer Fudds seat and he open election headquaters in the VOP, I assume his political on his election office would not be accessory...i guess??
If political signs are NOT exempt, isnt it intersting that the 6 month moratorium expires just after Labor Day ...just in time for what is traditionally deemed the election season.
Notice the council is not up for re election this year and if they were there would be no moratorium.
And Sno Shovel Phil says electronic signs should have higher permitting fees (taxes) b/c they really constitute multiple signs b/c they change to a diff sign/message every 20 seconds. How about every day your sidewalk stays unshovled we impose another $50 violation? Each day will be deemed a violation.....kinda like how the zoning ord. works.

the way I understand it is this... You apply for a sign permit the way the ordinance reads now.The permit is issued after the meeting for the planning board meeting is posted. You put up the sign with a issued permit. When the new ordiance is passed and you do not meet the new guide lines.... you have to take sign down and conform. or go for a variance..here is my concern... lets see the new proposed ordinance so at least I can suggest to my customers this is what you might be allowed?? what is sad is the phone has been ringing after a slow year... now and I have two customers I have been working on... they don't want to do a sign... why spend the money if I have to take it down??

I have sold a few of these message boards and they are very effective.. most have a 10 to 30 percent increase in business.. so would you think the council would want a business to suceed..here is the problem the council says no to a business owner but says yes to the city putting signs up like this...at the DCU Center they have three and is in the process of changeing the one by the hotel. Once up they will sell advertsing space... they can, but it becomes a non-accessory sign which requires a special permit for the likes of you and me .. I agree with billboards etc to put on hold that is the issue with all the variances latly.. but the rest of us trying to suceed.. just pay an increase in real estate tax and find another way to get business.

What we really need is a 6 month moratorium on the city council. They should just stay home for 6 months.
Signman, I think the DCU center is city owned property and the city is exempt from the zoning ordinace and therefore exempt from signage laws w/in the zoning ordinace...I assume???
What about so called sandwich board signs that are hung on human beings and not on property? Am I still w/in my rights to accessorize myself with a sandwich board sign in front of city hall?
What about NOLA Fest 2010? I assume a few banners or some kind of temporary signs would typically be put in place? Dittos for the Puerto Rican Fest in August?

I know that but if the council has such a great concern I would think they would lead by example... hey when this first came up on the message centers.. they wanted a moratorium and they pretty much at the same time voted to approve putting on up on the DCU.. I don;t have an issue but don't say we don't want them there but they are okay for me...

The council is a classic case of do as I say, not as I do.
We need a council of 11 people, at least 1/2 of whom have significant private business experience or this city is going to die off slowly and incrementally. (Note for this purpose, lawyering will not be considered private business exp.)
Another thought here. I wonder what this will do to the "underground" sign business? Gets to the point where people just cannot function w/in the new rules.....guess what happens

They just put them up without a permit... see photo that I took and Bill wrote on back in December. There is company now putting awnings up around the city with no permit..The Code has been great when I complain (only if I lose a job to this guy) but I can't and won't spend my day complaining... but this guy should be shut down... he hjas most of the “sign pollution” that now exists in the city. second to the liquor and cigarette signs... never mind lost revenue to the city
The original request by councilor Lukes was clearly deleterious to any business that would come in over the next several months to request a sign to advertise their company ...a very basic need. I was looking for reason, and I got a compromise, but we all need to stay on top of this to ensure whatever the end result of the new ordinances are that they happen sooner than later.
