My field trip to the RMV today at 6:30pm.

RMV is open until 700pm on Thursdays so I figured if I got theer at 630 the most I could have was a 1/2 hour wait. WRONG!

Get my number A153. Tix says 29 people in front of me. I count at least 53 people there not counting kids and what appears to be couples.

I forgot to bring reading material so after about 15 mins I decide to take a hike up to Red Rooster Pantry at Main and Franklin.

As I walk by Ding Ho there's a crowd of about 8-10, 20 something year olds ..."almost" pajama people" making all kinds noise. Not that bad, but definitely very boisterous.

I approach the The Hand It Over Theatre and take a glance in. Cant for the life of me understand why they put a modernistic looking facade on what is supposed to be a historic restoration. What do I know, I am not a Member of AIA ( Amer Inst. Archt's.)

Continue across Federal St. and from Federal St to the Red Rooster Pantry I count 16-17 steel grate overhead security doors. I think to myself, if am a theatre patron from Northboro or Southboro do I want to see this kind of environment (steel protective overhead garage doors on store fronts)?

I reach Red Rooster Pantry and Globe & Herald are both sold out. I head back and as I cross Federal St there's a dude across the street in front of SBSB having a real foul mouthed conversation with his cell phone all of which can be clearly heard across Main St. He eventuaaly crosses Main and the loud, foul mouthed conversation ceases.

As I approach Federal Sq park I notice there is a Do Not Enter sign at the apex of the triangle, directing south bound traffic on Main St not to enter...but it's confusing. Which side of it do you not enter, the Main St side or the Hanover Theatre side? Signage should also say "Keep Right".

There's also a sign of sorts that you have rotate 90 degrees to read b/c the letters are vertical and not horizontal. The sign says "Downtown District" but I had trouble trying to read it b/c the black letters are just pieces of steel that are not that clearly visible /readable and I have excellent distance sight.

I cross over to the Federal Sq. Park and observe the turtle & fish and statues dont have any water squirting from them. MMMMMMMMMMM. Bottom of the ceeeement trutle & fish thingie pond there looks like it hasnt seen anywater lately.

I walk over to the other little ceeeement pond right behind the Parthenon like structure, same thing... fountains arent squirting and it looks like it hasnt seen water in ages.

I look to my right in front of the Federal building and see the Federal Sq parking garage that was supposedly cleaned up and the precast concrete pieces that form the 5 or 6 story facade are grungy looking, stained, weathered and in need of a good power washing.

The parking garage sign cannot be seen as you approach the garage from either the south or the north. You have to be almost standing in front of the garage to actaully see the sign. It needs signs that protrude somewhat from the strucrutre so appraoching motorists can see them.

I approach the registry and the lot has emptied out considerably. (Jahn is now happy). I enter the RMV and there are still ooodles of people waiting to be served. It's now past 700pm closing time so they arent giving out any more numbered tickets. I still have my ticket A153. They call A141. But to my dismay where 11 registry clerks were standing behind the counter, there now only 3 of them. Most of them went left at 700pm !!!!!! WTF !!!!!!!!!

Bottom line, I exit the registry at 750pm, 1 hour and 20 mins later. Only 4-5 cars left in RMV lot. What a god dam messy lot. papers, trash, long uncut weeds everywhere. What a ++++house. (FWIW, Stop & Shop has their lots vacuumed daily).

I head North on Main St. Pass by the privately owed (Krock?) parking lot at Main & Central Sts opposite the old Plymouth Theatre. There's a huge van truck (maybe an old Hertz rental van) emblazoned with large yellow lettering on the side and front that says PARK. Private ownership knows what signage means!

I turn down School St. Car pulls right out in front of me. We both tirn left on Worc center Blvd. At next redlight i turn and look at the guy. Light turns green & guy goes flying 101 mph into the police station. Under cover cops?

Now theres are the observations of a layman about the Hand it Over Theatre District. I am sure professionals could point out other short comings and/or tell me what if anything is wrong about my observatiosn /stateements?

BTW does anyone recall years ago when WOMAG took the T&G to task for moving printing and distribution operations to Millbury?

Now WOMAG Moves to Holden.....or so it appears?

How Will the former editor in chief of WOMAG now tout his Canal District project & his other opinions? Maybe it doesnt need any more touting......and it's a done deal...and the $900,000 feasibility study is just ruse to make it look like it's still under possible consideration when in fact the power players know its a done deal?

Jahn,

WOMAG is staying put in the Canal District. However, as I predicted when I first heard the news, this is very bad news for Worcester's alternative weekly. It's already started with 7 staffers let go before the ink is even dry on the purchase & sale agreement.

Dave Z:

I love you but 1) WoMag probably has some lease whereby the new owner has to take it over so they are staying until the lease ends and 2) no way UNUM is moving to City Square.

Hope I am wrong on both counts.

Bill

PS I noticed Jahn walking downtown last night and realized downtown Worcester had hit rock bottom

Bill,

I agree with your reasoning about why WOMAG is staying where it is (for now). But you can by me dinner when I'm right about UNUM @ City Square.

Dave Z:

If UNUM moves to City Square I will gladly buy you dinner at the old TiNOva
