Today's headline in the Telegram. Let me tell you right now there is no way they are going to stay in the City of Worcester. Where are you going to find space and parking for 700 people?
Maybe a better question will be what is going to happen to the space that they leave behind. Maybe a CDC will come in and turn it into low income/affordable housing. Best part is that the welfare offices are right next door.
On another note I walked downtown working late last night to grab a couple things from CVS. Tried to open the doors, but they were closed. What time was it? 7:15Pm--it closes at 7:00PM.

Bill, I have not read the article yet but there have been numerous rumors in the past that they would be leaving their present offices for City Square.
I just finished the article. They're looking for 175,000 square feet preferably within Worcester. The new trigger lease requirements for City Square to start demolition of the former mall is (I believe 185,000 sq. ft). City Manager Mike O’Brien will be lobbying hard for their move to City Square. A win-win all around.

I thought the same thing. Question you need to ask is why would you leave space that you to move a 1/4 mile and then pay rent.
They are gone and the Mayor, by her comments, knows it. Seriously this will leave a huge whole in this section of downtown.
Maybe we should really try to talk to the colleges about downtown campuses?

OK.......you can thwack me upside the head......then answer me.........but where is CVS downtown....not that it matters to me........but I thought the one at the outlet Malls closed....I am guessing it has to be on Main St.........but my mind is coming up blank.............hopefully when you tell me....then I'll remember..........sometimes the
old mind aint what it used to be....also sadly ....it shows how littel need I have to interface with downtown.
My specualtion is UNUM rents somewhere....not sure where...........and then gradually moves the operation to out of state.........prob Tenn where they are headquartered................
folks the cost of living and therefore compnay expenses are much less in other satates like NC, etc. Citibank had the right idea 25 yrs ago............moved their call center from NYC to N. Dakota.........I have a company I deal with regularly.......their call center is in Northern Maine....where the farmers wife or daughter is elated to get a desk job for $9.00 hr.
Meanwhile on WTAG this morning I am listening to the absoolute BULL++++ that surrounds this police detail issue.....everyone is talking cost of a cop vs a flagman....this isnt even the ++++ing issue......reality is the detials arent even needed........
But Clive expressed this morning what I have been trying to say for the last week or so re: tghis alleged police payroll fraud......
A. These are the good guys.
B. Everyone does it.
C. They should have to pay it back (vs. getting axed).
D. SOL may have run in some cases
E. Their Super's should have caught it.
and if it turns out to be pervasive................we cant fire 10% of the force.
I tell you there are 2 classes of employees developing the last 20to 30 years.............public sector 'eees and private sector 'eees.
Again a 20 yr old kid I know just got fired from his bartender job for "comping" himself a $20 entree on the managers comp card at he restaurant he works at.........can you say immediately terminated. A mere $20.
I wonder if some of these older cops will fall on their sword to save others?
Bill, I respectfully disagree with your opinion that they would not relocate a ¼ of mile so City Square must be dead as a possible relocation site. When they have 400,000 square feet of space that is in very antiquated facilities, I would want to be in brand new 1st class office space in a signature project that combines all of my departments under the same roof. And as Jahn pointed out, by renting space they have the option to consolidate their operations elsewhere if the economic climate of doing business in Massachusetts becomes prohibitive.
As for the comments from our esteemed mayor, has she ever said anything positive about anything at all in this city?

It is ....NOW.... cost prohibitive...and one of the big reaosns is the public sector employees and unions are too powerful. There is no balance in our state legislature. Seems every 4th person works in a gov't job.
a. police details
b. Projct Labor Agreemnts
c. out of control public pensions systems.
d. exorbitant workmens comp costs.
e. regulatory nightmares
f. the list is endless
You know its bad when... Worcester is the only major city I know that doesn't have a McDonald's downtown.

In other areas of teh country news like this UNUM story or the police payroll issue.....would immedialtely bring the council back into unplanned sessions........but will it happen.....i doubt.........they're ensconced in South Yarmouth until Labor Day .

Anonymous we did almost have a McD's at the corner or Main and Madison St...............site of the soon to re-habbed old Burwick Furniture building ( a.k.a. The Hadley Building) It will now be low income housing.
Back about 10 yrs ago the city stepped up to teh plate to stop it..i forget teh details........maybe a zoning change or a curbcut they wont allow??..............SSDD for Wyman Gordon old site too.
We also did have a McD's and a Burger King kiddie corner at Main St and Commercial back in the 70's and 80's
BTW that Hadley building rehab into apts...........i was sitting there at the lights the other night wondering......there are how many apts going there..... 30 or 40?...where do these people go to chill on a hot summer night?...........the sidewalk??............will this be like the Vendome Apt block that is 100 yards further up Chandler st..people chilling on the front steps all night?

I remember when the Mickey D's closed in Davis Square back in the 80's...now it is The Burren owned by Tommy & Louise McCarthy who both used to play often in Worcester..Tommy sits in with the Chieftains often...anyway the Mickey D's is back now that Davis Square in Somerville is the happening place nowadays:>)...
Jahn, as far as Rovezzi's, Tiano's or Union Station The Restaurant, it's about a down economic climate and some poor business decisions for Tiano's and Union Station. There are restaurants opening and closing all the time whether in Worcester, the suburbs or our State Capital. I bet you there are even some that open and close in Springfield or Utica, N.Y. LOL

John, according to what was said on Levys show a few months ago (I think it was Rushton who said it??)............600 city employess are out on IOD.....injured on duty status....(even better deal than WC).....the city supposedly has 4800 employees...........thats 13% of the workforce......out injured............now I ask you ...when was the last time our CEO or board of directors( council) SERIOUSLY attacked this issue?.......further I ask you how many private co's would put up with horse++++?
I just made a trip across the city.......needed to buy the Herald b/c I knew I'd some have time to kill on my errands
1st store I stop at is out of them....OK it happens
2nd store I pick up herald...walk to counter.....clerk is feeding daily lotto slips into machine..I wait.....I wait....I wait....(I only had a $5 dollar bill)....pile of daily tix finally is done...........woman then hands the clerk a huge stack of Keno input slips.........WTH I say to myself....this place has Keno?...I look around .....YUP there's the Keno screen on the wall......I return paper to newstand and out I go empty handed.
3rd stop.....Local convience store.......had to be 6 or 7 Pajama People hangin' in the parking lot............all being detox'ed......I get hit up for spare change...told the spare change entrepeneur NADA....enter the store...grab the paper.......get in line of only 1 person........and again Keno input slips !!!!!........YUP ...I guess we also now have Keno To Go in some convenience stores....no screen in store.......but it was only a minute wait......finally I get my dose of Wednesdays Herald.....it's all Howie Carrs fault.
How many Keno's To Go you suppose there are in Weston?
Now I like a good game of Keno at a few places I go to occasionally along with a meal and an adult libation......but the Keno gal is separate station/cash register....so that real paying customers are not inconvenienced............same comments cna be made for many gas statiosn too.
Bottomline......get rid of pajama people.........the keno to do disappears too......and I get my Herald in short order.
I recall when the lottery was one weekly drawing ...and a tix was $.50.....the year was 1972.......the second week I matched the middle 2 yellow numbers and won $25.............now look what this lottery has morphed into.......the crack cocaine of cash addicted cities & towns
For the record, the McDonald's in Downtown Crossing/Boston is also closed.
