City Council Wish List

  1. Work on a single real estate tax for both commercial and residential
  2. Create economic zones in the City of Worcester that waive all permitting fees, sewer hook-ups, etc and lock in assessed values for ten years. This is what was done in Philadelphia and was done with the Hanover Theatre
  3. Take action to dispose of city assets like the Green Hill Golf Course and Worcester Airport
  4. Stop all future high density low income housing projects
  5. Take steps to work on John Mahoney's idea to create Boston Latin type high school downtown whereby we utilzie the strenghts of all the area colleges

You may think number 3 is a stretch, but two years ago the Council voted to ban duplexes in zones designated either RS-7 or RS-10 why can't they do the same with low income housing projects. Keep in mind that we are already way above the 10% threshold as mandated by the Commonwealth.

Was going to list better train service, but I am not sure how much the City Council can really do.

We should really keep track of these lists and then try to schedule debates later on in the year between people running for council and mayor where we propose these wish list questions to them.

I would add that I would like to see neighborhood definitions permanently solidified in the form of a comprehensive website where you can go and find out what day to day life is like in the different neighborhoods of Worcester and what ammenities those neighborhoods offer.

It's time to let outsiders in on our city.

Bill, in regards to your request for something like the Boston Latin School...

Are you familiar with the Mass Academy of Math and Science? It is funded completely by WPI for promising math and science students. It is a two year high school program (junior and senior year). Their senior year is spent taking WPI classes. This is completely funded by WPI, ie. it costs the taxpayers (or students) ZERO. I believe they enroll 50 students per year.

The charter schools are getting around $6000 per student for high school kids. If WPI is educating 100 kids for free, they are giving back $600,000 per year. That doesn't take into account that WPI tuition is $35,000 per year, not $6,000.

I'm always amazed when people call for PILOT, yet fail to recognize programs like this.

Oh, and as for the kudos to maintenance and ground crews...

THAT'S THEIR JOB.

Steve:

yeah the Math Academy is a great program. That could be the model for a downtown campus for similar high school.

Imagine if we could offer the new Voke SChool, Math Academy and a "Worcester Latin". More importantly I wanted to target it downtown to help bring some life downtown like the Mass School of Pharmacy has and utilize the strengths of all the local colleges by bringing them downtown to work together on this.

Steve this is a good point about WPI M&S academy.

I think however you have your math only 1/2 correct. The saving to the city isnt the $6,000 per student is cost WPI for M&S Academy........the real savings is 11,900 average per yr that its cost sthe city to educate each public school student...............so the rela saving to the city is 11,900 x 100 kids = 1,200,000 saving to the city each year......thats $1.2 million for you Worc public school grads [g]

So why does it cost the city 2x what it costs other schools to educate kids?? Maybe b/c the school committee is has been bought & sold by the treachers union voting block? Maybe Kate T. can enlighten us why we cant use private custodial services to clean our schools??

Steve, the most vocal mouthpiece for PILot Payments is Mr Phil Palmieiri, city councilor who believe it of not is, accodring the city treasurs website of a few weeks ago, behind on his own property taxes.....possibly on diff parcels he owns in the city...and it appears he has been behind in prior yrs too........

What do they say up there on Xaverian Brothers Hill in Shrewesbury??........

"Let he who is the least sinner amongst toss the 1st stone?"

Wonder if Phil has shoveled his sidewalks yet? Phil is 0-4 re shoveling his sidewalks for the 4 storms we have had already thsi season. Maybe he can be the next Red sox catcher?
